OUR STORY

Hazel Dennehy, along with her husband Michael, are the driving force behind Street Angels, a grassroots organisation committed to supporting Cork’s homeless community. Her dedication to this cause began in 2010 when she first started volunteering with homeless charities. However, it was the tragic loss of a close friend—who passed away on the streets—that deepened her resolve to make a difference in the lives of those facing homelessness.

Over the years, Hazel worked with multiple homeless charities, gaining invaluable insight into the challenges faced by rough sleepers and the systemic issues that perpetuate homelessness. While she appreciated the opportunity to contribute, she felt compelled to create something more personal—an organisation that could fill the gaps in support and provide hands-on, compassionate care. In 2019, she founded Street Angels to do just that.

The name Street Angels holds special meaning for Hazel. During her time volunteering, those she helped often referred to her as their “street angel” because they knew they could rely on her—whether for food, clothing, or simply a listening ear. That term of endearment stayed with her, and when the time came to name her organisation, it was the perfect choice.

Street Angels goes beyond immediate aid, focusing on long-term solutions to break the cycle of homelessness. Hazel has expanded the organisation’s reach to include prison outreach, offering rehabilitation support and guidance to inmates at risk of homelessness upon release. The team also assists with addiction treatment programs, accompanies individuals to medical appointments, and advocates for systemic change.

A vocal advocate for the homeless, Hazel has spoken on radio and other platforms about the urgent need for greater compassion and policy reform in Ireland. She believes everyone deserves dignity, safety, and the chance to rebuild their lives—and Street Angels works tirelessly to make that a reality.

Hazel often expresses deep gratitude for her dedicated team of volunteers, past and present, acknowledging that Street Angels wouldn’t exist without their unwavering support. Through their collective efforts, they continue to be angels for those who need it most.

Together, we can make a difference—one person at a time.
